European Sources Online

European Sources Online (ESO) is an added-value, web-based information service providing information on the European Union, the countries of Europe, and on issues of interest to citizens, researchers and stakeholders in Europe.

ESO provides powerful functionality which makes it easy for users to discover information on 50 countries of Europe, plus the activities of the major international organisations of Europe, from political, legal, social, environmental, economic and many other perspectives.

ESO is of particular relevance to those libraries designated European Public Information Centres and offers access to full text materials from:

• The EU and other international organisations, national governments, think tanks and research organisations, professional organisations and NGOs via links to the external web
• Key commercial news sources, such as The Financial Times and European Voice
• The editorial team in the form of a series of 100 regularly-updated information guides covering European institutions, policies and countries.

Publisher’s selection criteria
ESO’s aim is to create a single easy-to-use source for searching across a unique range of information sources on Europe. The choice is made by an editorial team based at the European Documentation Centre at Cardiff University, who are experienced at dealing with enquiries from the public on European issues. ESO is a professional information service with no editorial perspective on the EU and is the only information service that allows EU and UK official information services to be found in one search, alongside key news sources, such as articles in the Financial Time and the BBC website. ESO does not offer an exclusively UK perspective, and allows comparison of perspectives from many information sources from other European countries, although always in English.

Over 99% of the information to be found currently in ESO has been published since 2000. The resource is updated daily
